Sometimes you wonder how a home can be on the market but ignored by other investors or even potential homeowners looking for a fixer upper. I think this house had been on the market for over a year when we decided to purchase it.
And what a strange transaction it was. The selling agent’s office was about 100 miles away from Albion and the seller, from what we could tell from city records, was a non-profit in Delaware.
When we got in touch with the seller’s agent, he desperately wanted to sell it but he didn’t have any idea about the condition or a way to access the house.
The yard hadn’t been mowed all summer. There were a number of city citations on the front door for not maintaining the yard. If there was a Realtor sign in the front yard, it was likely hidden in the grass.
And to top it off, there wasn’t a lockbox. We were told us to “make our way in” if we could somehow. Yikes.
We had a local locksmith drill out and replace the front door handle and found… a home totally worth the investment! It needed a new roof and windows and some plumbing repair from not properly winterizing the pipes, but the hardwood floors were in pretty good shape and with new carpeting in the upstairs bedrooms, a new coat of paint, and some good old fashioned scrubbing, we were in business.
The big selling point of this house is probably the large rear deck and 2.5 car garage.
